"The Las Limas Monument One". Also Known As "The Las Limas Figure" & "The Señor de las Limas". |
---|
The Veracruz University's Museum Of Anthropology is devoted to all of the archaeology of Veracruz and not just the Olmec culture in Mexico. The large photo on this page is Olmec. It is the Las Limas Monument One. It is a greenstone figure of a youth holding a limp were - jaguar baby. The statue was discovered in near Jesús Carranza, Veracruz, by two local children, Rosa and Severiano Paschal Manuel. Dug out and taken to their nearby home, it was declared the "La Virgen de las Limas" and set up on its own altar. After promising to keep "The Señor de las Limas" on display — and to build a local school — archaeologists moved the sculpture to the Xalapa Museum of Anthropology. "The Señor de las Limas" was then stolen from the museum, in October 1970, to be found later in a motel room in San Antonio, Texas. It is back on display! This page will mainly show a sample of the works of some of the other cultures in Veracruz. One interesting culture is the Remojadas culture, which also applies to an archaeological site, as well as an artistic style that flourished on Mexico's Veracruz Gulf Coast from perhaps 100 BCE to 800 CE. The Remojadas culture is considered part of the larger Classic Veracruz culture. The Remojadas culture is known for its Sonrientes (smiling faces), featuring very wide smiles on curiously shaped—almost triangular—faces. Often there is only a Sonrientes head. Other times they are attached to childlike bodies which outstretched arms and displayed palms. They almost always are smiling usually showing their teeth and, on occasion, they may be sticking their tongue sout between their teeth. Smiles are unusual in Mesoamerican art! Again, we will only show pictures of exhibits in this museum that impressed us. This is a museum that you must visit to appreciate. Plan to spend a day there if you can. There are some examples of the wheel being used as well as axe blades that some researchers say never existed in Mesoamerica. But, here they are! We are including pictures of several pottery items that were created by the cult that worshiped the surrounding caves and the beings who lived in them. These were represented by deities that acquired the attributes of bats and vampires. Some of the pottery pieces were used to ignite live coals and resins in their interiors releasing aromatic gases into the air. We visited this museum on January 18, 2004 and all of our photos on this page were taken on that date.
