In 1839 Joseph Smith bought the property of Commerce, Illinois as a refuge for the LDS people who were being driven from Missouri by religious persecution. It was a swamp and a few log cabins. By 1845 it had grown to about 11,000, rivaling Chicago, and it was one of the ten largest cities in the United States at that time. It all ended after the death of Joseph Smith on June 27th of 1844 when he was murdered by a mob in Carthage, Illinois. The pageant is the story of Nauvoo. We hope these pictures will encourage you to see the pageant in person. It is put on by a cast of over 600 people who volunteer their time and money for your enjoyment. This page is in our small way to show the hard work and effort put forth by those wonderful people who make this pageant available for our enjoyment. This page contains a sample of the best digital photos and pictures that we have taken of the City Of Joseph Pageant in Nauvoo, Illinois. The City Of Joseph Pageant was renamed the Nauvoo Pageant and was first performed in 2005 to commemorate the 200th birthday of Joseph Smith the prophet and founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These pictures and photos are for your enjoyment and may be freely used for clean, wholesome, noncommercial, purposes that are supportive of the LDS Church and the City Of Joseph Pageant.
