In 1839 Joseph Smith bought the property of Commerce, Illinois as a refuge for the LDS people who were being driven from Missouri by religious persecution. It was a swamp and a few log cabins. There is much controversy concerning the destruction of the LDS Temple in Nauvoo, Illinois. The one undisputed fact is that it burned down in the early morning of 9 October 1848. It was with great joy when at the final session of the April 1999 General Conference, President Gordon B. Hinckley announced that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would rebuild the Nauvoo Temple, to serve both as a functioning temple and as a monument to the early Latter-day Saints who sacrificed so much for the construction of the original Temple. President Hinckley later on, presided over the ground breaking ceremonies held on October 24, 1999. The cornerstones were laid on November 5, 2000. Then construction progressed steadily and the temple was completed during June of 2002 The new Nauvoo Illinois Temple was dedicated on June 27, 2002 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, becoming the Church's 113th functioning temple. Audrey and George DeLange were at the construction of the temple during July 27 and 28 of 2001 and took these photos of the construction that they observed.
