The subject of this web page is "The Yuma Crossing." What does that mean?

That means that we will discuss the first people to use the Yuma Crossing, why they used it, & how they used it. We also will discuss travel on foot, row boats, ferry boats, steam boats, bridges, railroad trains, and modern day cars, & trucks. The present day National Heritage Area Park in Yuma, Arizona is a great place to visit, to study the movement of animals, people, & goods; across the Colorado River at Yuma.

Any discussion of the Yuma Crossing should be preceeded by a brief discussion about the Colorado River.

The Colorado River is one of the principal rivers of the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico (the other being the Rio Grande). The 1,450-mile (2,330 km) Colorado River drains an expansive, arid watershed that encompasses parts of seven U.S. and two Mexican states. Rising in the central Rocky Mountains in the U.S., the river flows generally southwest across the Colorado Plateau and through the Grand Canyon before reaching Lake Mead on the ArizonaNevada border, where it turns south toward the international border. After entering Mexico, the Colorado approaches the large Colorado River Delta at the tip of the Gulf of California between Baja California and Sonora.

The Yuma Crossing is a site in both Arizona, and California that is significant for its historical association with transportation and communication across the Colorado River. To be clear, we are referring to a point where people and goods crossed the Colorado River or moved people and goods on the Colorado River through Mexico, into the present day Yuma, Arizona, in the United States.

The crossing point on the Colorado River connected New Spain and Las Californias during the Spanish Colonial period (15501810), and also during the Western expansion of the United States (1807-1912).

Features of the Arizona side of the river include the Yuma Quartermaster Depot and Yuma Territorial Prison. Features on the California Side include Fort Yuma, which protected the area from 1850 to 1885.

The reason this site was used for a river crossing is that it was the only narrow place on the Colorado River for almost a thousand miles. It also was where two massive granite outcroppings were located on the Colorado River. It was also an ancient crossing point for both the Patayan tribes (7001550 CE.), and later on the Quechan (about 1550 CE. to Present).

In 1540, Yumas European history began at the River Crossing at Yuma with the arrival of the Spanish explorer Hernando de Alarcon. Much later the Yuma Crossing became the focal point for travel to the Wild West, from the 1840s California Gold Rush era to the arrival of the railroad in the 1877, and finally the Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge, which linked the East coast and the West coast in one land route.

Then after the Mexican-American War in 1848, the U.S. Army built Fort Yuma here to protect travelers from Indians raiding the area. It was also the center point of conflict in the Yuma War of 1850-53. Then from 1864-1890, the fort and nearby facilities was the main army base to support the US Army's efforts to control the Indians throughout the greater southwest.

At about the same time, the Butterfield Stage established a stagecoach station about a mile downriver from Yuma for their main line coming from the east to California.

After the Army arrived and built Fort Yuma, the ferry they used was purchased by L. J. F. Jaeger and his partner from Johnson and his partners. It was named Jaeger's Ferry.

Jaeger developed the ferry that could carry a wagon and team of horses between the California and Arizona shores. Jaeger later built a store and hotel on the north bank, in California, calling it Jaeger City.

Across the river he owned a lot in Colorado City for the price of a ferrying its surveying party across the river.

In 1858 the ferry became the crossing point of the Butterfield Overland Mail and Jaeger City became the location of its stage station and its local district office.

Later, during the Great Flood of 1862, Jaeger's Ferry, Jaeger City and Colorado City were destroyed by the flooding of the Colorado River. Today, nothing remains.

The Yuma Crossing was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966, under the name Yuma Crossing and Associated Sites.
