Los Alamos Historical Museum:

We wish to thank Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for some of the images and information on this page. We share information with Wikipedia.

The Los Alamos Historical Museum is housed in the historic Guest House, located next to Fuller Lodge, of Los Alamos Ranch School, which was General Leslie Groves's favorite place to stay during the Manhattan Project.

The museum features exhibits on the geological history of the Pajarito Plateau, including the volcanic explosion that created the world's second largest caldera, known as the Valles Caldera.

It also has displays on the early settlers of the area, the Ancestral Pueblo Indians and the early homesteaders.

The museum displays the history of the Los Alamos Ranch School, an elite educational institution for wealthy boys. It was founded by Ashley Pond to build both the bodies and the minds of boys, who wore shorts as part of their school uniforms, even during the winter. The school closed in 1943 when the United States government seized the property for the Manhattan Project, the top secret project to create the atomic bomb.

Ashley Pond was a Detroit businessman, who had been plagued by bronchitis and other ailments as a child; therefore he wanted to give youngsters a chance to improve their health away from polluted, urban environments. So,Mr. Pond started the Los Alamos Ranch School in 1917 to help boys become strong young men through a life of rigorous outdoor living and a classical education.

Ashley Pond began the school, with a few ranch buildings, left over from the Harold H. Brook homestead, and a newly constructed Big House; which was a two-story, upright log building which housed classrooms, a dining hall, and school offices.

Later on, screens were added to the wrap-around portal, and the boys slept on the porch year-round, no matter what the weather. Hot or cold!

The school's curriculum was standard for the other college preparatory schools of the time, and the very high academic standards, helped to recruit boys from moderately wealthy families.

Photos and artifacts in the museum document this time and tell the stories of the people who lived it.

The museum also has an area for traveling exhibits which have featured a wide variety of exhibitions about New Mexico history and World War II.

The Los Alamos Historical Museum is not large or fancy, but it describes the periods of local Los Alamos history, from the time of the Pueblo People through the Manhattan Project.

Most of the people in the United States probably don't know that before Los Alamos became a town, Los Alamos was a large ranch, and a private school for boys.

This is probably the most "authentic" location in Los Alamos if you want to get an idea of what is was like to work at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. The building is from the boys' school that turned into a super-secret laboratory, during WW2.

The students formed the first horse mounted Boy Scout troop in the country.

The museum is housed in what was once the guest cottage for that school. The lodge next door was where the boys dined, had dances etc.

The museum does a good job of telling this story, with a wall size photo of the students at the ranch, and many other photos, clothing etc from the era.

Each room in the museum covers an era. The "bomb" room has some convincing photos of the war damage in Japan, a guard station from the Los Alamos plant etc.

There is a special exhibit on the neighboring town of White Rock, which has a rock that it invites townspeople to paint over. The exhibit has many photos of interesting ways the rock has been painted in the past, some fairly creative.

It gives a good overview of town history, and is a wonderful starting point for further exploration of the eras that it depicts.

The Los Alamos school differed from other health schools at the time in that it integrated it's program with that off the Boy Scouts of America. The boys in the school belonged to the Los Alamos Troop # 22, the first mounted Boy Scout troop in the country and now one of the nations oldest continuous troops. The Boy Scout uniform was the Los Alamos Ranch School uniform, which includied shorts year-round.

During its 25 years of operation, the school educated more than 600 boys, most of whom went on to successful careers.

On Dec. 7, 1942, a year to the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, A.J. Connell read a letter he had received from Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson to the students and faculty. The U.S. Army was taking over the schools property in the interests of the United States in the prosecution of the War

We strongly recommend that you visit the Museum to learn all of the story. It is worth at least an hour or more of your time and it is a great way to begin your tour of Los Alamos.

We also recommend that you take a look at the nearby Ashley Pond; where they received their water. "Ashley Pond," what a great name for the pond!
