After the martyrdom of Joseph Smith, the Saints were led from Nauvoo to the site of modern day Salt Lake City. It was not too long afterwards that Brigham Young directed the Saints to expand their growth into other areas. Elder Carl B. Pratt of the Seventy and president of the Mexico South Area, who presided at the groundbreaking ceremony on March 13, 1999, related the declaration made by President Brigham Young in 1863. Elder Pratt paraphrased saying, "that the Salt Lake Temple would not be the only temple built, but there would be hundreds of temples on the earth." He added, "Today, we are seeing the fulfillment of this prophecy." The Oaxaca Mexico Temple was dedicated on 11 March 2000, by James E. Faust. The Oaxaca Mexico Temple is officially considered the 73rd LDS Temple. Three other temples built are not considered in the official count. They are the Kirkland Temple, The Original Nauvoo Temple, and the Apia, Western Samoa Temple which was destroyed by fire on July 9, 2003. The Oaxaca Mexico Temple is located at Av. Universidad #139, esq. Entrada A, del Fracc. Real de Candiani, Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mxico. The site including an adjacent meetinghouse is on an area in a commercial area of the capital city of Oaxaca de Jurez on a site of 1.87 acres in size. The temple is of classic modern, single-spire design. It has a beautiful exterior finish of white marble from Torren, Mexico. It has two ordinance rooms and two sealing rooms with a total floor area of 10,700 square feet It's Temple Code is OAXAC. The telephone number is (52) 951-516-9588. The Xoxocotln International airport (IATA: OAX, ICAO: MMOX) Is the international airport located at Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico. It handles the national and international air traffic for the city of Oaxaca. We have links on this page that will connect you with flights into and out of the Xoxocotln International airport and allow you to book any of several of the best hotels in Oaxaca.
